4/12: Lecture: The American Arts and Crafts Movement in New York State
Speaker: Dr. Bruce A. Austin, Chair, Professional Technical Communication, Rochester Institute of Technology
Monday, 7:00 pm at the Nancy Howe Auditorium at the David A. Howe Public Library, 155 N. Main St., Wellsville, 585-593-3410
The American arts and Crafts Movement, or "mission" gained popularity as a decorative style (furniture, ceramics, metal, lighting, textiles, jewelry) beginning in 1900, and by 1920 had gone out of style. Arts and Crafts, however, was more than simply a decorative style - it was also a philosophy, an ethos, a way of living, and significantly, an enormous business. This presentation, accompanied by slides, affords listeners an opportunity to gain awareness and knowledge of the Movement, its philosophy and creative product, and focuses on the unique contributions of Arts and Crafts creators in New York State. Attendees are welcome to bring an Arts and Crafts object to add to the discussion. This program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities' Speakers in the Humanities program.
