The Village of Wellsville has been working to improve the development of the downtown area through a number of small projects.  These projects are usually done in conjunction with other local and regional agencies.  Alfred Housing Committee has been an integral part of this program along with the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce.  Some of the projects that are currently underway or in the works include:

Downtown Lighting: Developing and installing new lighting downtown to improve the ambience of the Village.  Presently the old Cobra Head style lights are used and these would be replaced with more decorative and historic looking poles and lights.

Gateway to the Village:  This project is underway and improving the primary entrance to the downtown area.  Madison Street has been redesigned between Park and Main Streets with new curbing, lighting, trees and a Gateway Arch to be installed during the next few years.   Decorative fencing has been installed as well as burning bushes along the Arterial to dress up this primary access road.  Gone are much of the old chain link fence that had fallen into disrepair.  Special thanks to the NYSDOT for all their cooperation and assistance on this project and the GIANT Food Market for providing the Burning Bushes.

Colligan Park: This small pocket park on South Main is in honor of Shane Colligan.  Located at the intersection with the Arterial and South Main Street it has been under construction for the last year.  It will offer a nice end cap to the Main Street Corridor as well as the obvious recreational uses.

Walkable Community: Plans are in the works to improve the walkability of the Village.  Initial work is on a 2 mile loop starting near the Gateway and wrapping around to the Riverwalk Plaza area.

Empire Zone Status: Much of the downtown has been put into the New York State Empire Zone program which allows businesses to take advantage of various tax breaks if the make investment in their buildings, equipment and/or increase the number of employees.  The Village of Wellsville is part of the Friendship Empire Zone: 585-973-2322.
