GIS - GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM

G I S is a relatively new part of the Department of Public Works.  The Village first started to develop the electronic mapping needed in the late 1990's by utilizing a fly-over by Erdman Anthony Associates that created very detailed mapping of the Village. Since that time additional data has been collected using high accuracy Trimble GPS units and Pictometry aerial photography developed through Allegany County.

Infrastructure Modeling is an on-going effort within the Village of Wellsville GIS.  Presently a program known as Micro-Paver is being utilized to plan the next ten years of pavement management within the Village.  MRB Group has helped us coordinate this and many of the other GIS projects noted. Good progress is being made on this program which should allow the Village to reclaim its streets back to a level of quality that hasn't been seen here in at least a decade.

The Village of Wellsville has successfully secured two grants from the New York State Archives program for local government. The first allowed us to develop a plan for GIS through an Assessment process. The second grant was to implement the plan in the Assessment. We have successfully moved into the 21st century with the distribution of our data throughout the Village offices. We now utilize a variety of technologies and methods to distribute data. These include Pictometry for aerial images., Image Mate for assessment information, Filemaker for data distribution, ArcReader to read ArcPublisher documents.

During this program we have scanned all the water valve cards, curb cards and electric pole cards. Presently this data is being linked to the map data for easy retrieval by field crews. We have also uploaded all of our sewer line VHS tape onto DVD so that it is available to the underground utility crews.

The entire Village tree inventory is available to the streets department for trees within the Village Right-of-Way. During the project the five buildings that are used by Public Works and the Municipal Building were linked via fiber optic lines for a high-speed server sharing system. Data from the Village GIS is now available in these various buildings using an ArcPublisher file system that allows the departments to view the data using ArcReader.

An ArcIMS interactive Wellsville Mapper is available to review some layers of the Village GIS at www.communityGIS.com.  If you need current data you should contact the office direct to confirm the most recent information that is available.  Here are a few basic maps that you can download in pdf format. [Please note that some of these were developed to be plotted on a large scale which is good for Viewing but may not print as clearly as you would like when put on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Please note that these are large files and may take time to load.]

Other Basic Maps can be provided for certain information that is relevant to renovation and new construction or other development activities within the Village by contacting the GIS Coordinator 585-593-1850.

In November the GIS office holds an open house on International GIS Day. This year the open house will be November 14th, 2007.
