STREETS AND SIDEWALKS
The Village
of Wellsville Public Works Department maintains the Street system using a
series of pavement management techniques. Residents are encouraged
to SLOW DOWN when approaching the crews working on the streets for
the safety of all. The Streets Crew is made up of your neighbors and
friends, help keep them safe.
WINTER:
Winter snows are removed
using the Village plow trucks. The streets are applied with a sand/salt
mix to improve traction and decrease the buildup of ice on the streets. The
sidewalks snow piles are removed approximately twice a year on Main
Street. The actual sidewalk shoveling is up to the landowners.
Motorists and pedestrians should be aware that the goal is to keep the streets
passable but that care must be exercised by the public when utilizing these
thoroughfares during the winter months as slippery sections may
exist.
SPRING:
After the winter snows have
stopped the Village owns and operates a Sweeper throughout the Village Street
system. Most streets are swept at least twice in the Spring.
Repairs to Curbs and filling potholes that have appeared during the winter
months and spring thaw is a constant effort during these months.
Residents are reminded NOT to put lawn clippings
or other debris into the street as it eventually clogs the storm drainage
system.
SUMMER:
Summer is the time to repave
streets and correct storm drainage issues. Culverts, catch basins and
related items are checked and cleaned as need. Smaller streets may have a Chip
Seal coat applied, while larger streets will receive reconstruction effort of
milling and new asphalt. The street system is on a rotating basis of
maintenance that is developed through the Micro-Paver computer program and the
historical knowledge of the Public Works crews. Residents are reminded
NOT to put lawn clippings or other debris into the street
as it eventually clogs the storm drainage system.
FALL:
Leaf pick-up is a primary function during the fall months of the Streets crews. The leaf pickup usually starts in early October and lasts into the 2nd week of November. Residents must not put leaves into the streets but rather on the lawns directly adjacent to the curbs. Putting leaves in the streets causes catch basins to become clogged very quickly and can lead to flooding problem during major rain events.
